Temporary total disability
Offers financial support if you are fully incapacitated for work due to illness or an accident. If you’re a student, you’re also covered if you are physically not able to attend lectures etc. You’re eligible for this insurance while you are registered with Temper, after you have worked at least 10 shifts via Temper and so long as your last shift has been within the last 3 months. You must also be over 18 but under 70 and be living in the UK. You will be eligible for payment from the 15th day of your inability to work and it provides monthly income for a maximum of 1 year.

What is temporary disability?
It’s more or less in the name: this insurance provides you with coverage if a doctor confirms you’re unable to work for a long period of time due to illness or an accident. If you’re a student, you’re also covered if you are physically not able to attend college. Thanks to this insurance, you’ll receive a monthly benefit , to make sure you’re not suddenly left without any income. You become eligible for this insurance after you’ve worked at least 10 shifts via the Temper platform. If you have an accident or become seriously ill, and after 2 weeks you’re still unable to work, you will receive these benefits until you’re able to work again (for a maximum of 1 year in total).
The monthly benefit you’ll receive is based on how much you’ve earned each month on average through Temper in the 3 months before you became incapacitated for work. For as long as you are unable to work (up to 1 year), you’ll receive 70% of that average monthly amount every month.
Other coverages
This insurance covers not only if you cannot work because of illness or because you are physically unable to go to lectures. You are also covered:
- if you have or adopt a child
- if you lose a close family member or have a miscarriage
- for damage to personal belongings due to an accident
Insured amounts
For parental and bereavement leave, you will receive a one-off lump sum of €500.
For damage to personal property due to an accident, repair costs are reimbursed up to a maximum of € 1,000. Motor vehicles and vessels are excluded.
The current value (how much something is worth at a certain moment) before and after the accident is taken into account. If the repair costs are higher than the difference in value of your belongings before and after the accident, you will be paid said difference (instead of the full repair costs).
What happens if you become incapacitated for work?
The best way to explain this is by using an example. We’ll call the person Sophie. Sophie earns some extra money by taking on shifts through Temper, and she is still registered with Temper. Unfortunately, she suddenly becomes very ill, which means she can’t work for a lengthy period of time. She had worked her 17th shift via Temper the week before she became ill, and is therefore eligible for this insurance. After it becomes clear that she can no longer work, she reports this to Alicia Insurance via the Temper app or website. Together with Alicia and the insurer, Sophie maps out the situation, and lets them know what her doctor has said.
In the 3 months before Sophie became ill, she earned an average of €1,500 a month through Temper. Sophie won’t be covered for the first 2 weeks of her illness. After that 2-week period, Sophie will receive € 1,050 per month (70% of €1,500). Luckily she’s fully back on track after 10 months! The monthly benefit stops.
Some example scenarios that are not covered
- You’re going home after a party, and get on your bike a bit too drunk. You don’t notice a red light, and get hit by a car. (Not covered: deliberate recklessness)
- You get into an argument with someone while you’re at work. It ends up with you starting a vicious fight. You end up with a broken leg. (Not covered: intent)
